Just when you thought Kratos might finally get a chance to put his axe down and retire, Sony Santa Monica has pulled him back into the fray. At San Diego Comic-Con this past Friday, game director Cory Barlog officially confirmed that the studio is working on a brand-new God of War title that puts the Ghost of Sparta back in the driver’s seat.

The Road to the Next Pantheon
While Barlog kept details about the project under wraps, he did clarify that this upcoming entry is slated to arrive after God of War: Laufey, which finally snagged a firm release date of February 16, 2027, for the PS5. We know that the new Kratos-led game will tie directly into the events of Laufey, acting as a narrative bridge. Given that Laufey teases the possibility of Kratos stepping into Egyptian or Tibetan mythologies, it’s a safe bet that his next outing will involve him knocking on the doors of gods who haven't had the pleasure of meeting him yet.
It’s been a busy few years for the franchise. Since 2022’s massive God of War Ragnarök, we’ve seen the release of the prequel God of War: Sons of Sparta—a collaboration between Sony Santa Monica and Mega Cat Studios—and we are still waiting on more concrete info regarding the rumored remake of the original trilogy.
God of War: Laufey itself is shaping up to be an interesting detour, following Faye as she fights through the "Everywhen" afterlife to secure the safety of Kratos and Atreus. Whether the new Kratos game serves as a direct sequel to that journey or a shift into an entirely new saga remains to be seen, but one thing is clear: Sony isn’t letting this series gather dust anytime soon.
