New Grand Theft Auto 6 footage arrives August 27th

If you’ve been losing your mind waiting to see actual, honest-to-god gameplay of Grand Theft Auto 6, the wait is finally getting a concrete end date. Rockstar Games has officially announced that an "extended look" at the title is dropping on August 27th. And yes, in a move that feels as bizarre as it is calculated, the premiere is happening exclusively on Netflix.

A Netflix Premiere?

The trailer—officially titled Grand Theft Auto 6: An Extended Look—will first hit Netflix on August 27th at 3pm ET (8pm BST). If you aren’t looking to log into your streaming account just to watch a trailer, you’ll have to wait a few more hours; it hits the official Rockstar Games YouTube channel and the game’s website at 9pm ET (2am BST).

It’s a strange partnership, though perhaps not entirely shocking given Netflix’s aggressive push into the gaming sphere lately, ranging from the acquisition of studios like Night School Studio to putting out titles like Fifa World Cup: Launch Edition. Still, it’s a high-profile move that underscores just how much gravity this game has.

Gameplay or Just More Fluff?

Here is the reality of the situation: Rockstar hasn't explicitly promised us raw gameplay. We’ve been fed montages and flashy cinematics for months, and at this point, the internet is so desperate for the real deal that "AI-generated slop" recreations of the game are racking up millions of views just to fill the void. With the game slated for a November release, we are dangerously close to launch without having seen a single second of actual player-controlled action. Compared to the marketing cycles for Grand Theft Auto 5 or Red Dead Redemption 2, where previews and hands-on impressions were already circulating by this stage, the total silence on GTA 6 is starting to feel slightly unnerving.

We don’t know how long this "extended look" will be, or if it will finally show us the UI, driving physics, or combat loops we’ve been craving. But with the clock ticking down to November, this August 27th drop is arguably the most important piece of marketing Rockstar has released yet. Fingers crossed we’re finally moving past the teaser phase and into the real thing.
