Square Enix to slash Final Fantasy 14 Switch 2 load times

If you were among the first to dive into Final Fantasy 14 on the Switch 2 following its Tuesday launch, you’ve likely noticed a frustrating hitch in the experience. While the port marks a massive milestone for Nintendo players jumping into Eorzea for the first time, those lengthy black screens during transitions are proving to be a real mood killer.

The "Black Screen" Bottleneck

Square Enix has officially acknowledged the issue, pinpointing exactly where the engine is tripping over itself. According to the devs, the hang-ups occur most often when you’re transitioning between battle phases, teleporting across maps within an instanced duty, or even just respawning after getting K.O.’d. It’s a jarring stop-and-start that pulls you right out of the flow of the game.

The technical culprit? It seems to be a struggle with data management when things get crowded. Square Enix explains that entering an instanced duty while surrounded by a large number of characters forces the game to perform heavy-duty cache clearing and data reloading to ensure everything renders safely. Essentially, the console is getting bogged down by the sheer volume of assets it’s trying to juggle at once, leading to those agonizingly long waits.

A Fix in the Pipeline

The good news is that the team claims to have already identified the bottleneck and is currently stress-testing a solution. They’ve been working on optimizing these background processes to handle the load more efficiently, and the goal is to push an update out as soon as testing wraps up. There's no hard date yet, but they’ve promised to address this and a few other lingering bugs in the near future.

If you're still sitting on the fence about whether to download the beastly 117 GB Free Trial version, it’s worth remembering that this is the full A Realm Reborn package, plus the Heavensward, Stormblood, and Shadowbringers expansions. While you’ll be capped at level 80 and face some social restrictions, it’s a massive chunk of RPG history—even if you have to endure a few extra seconds of staring at a black screen until the patch drops.
